Basic Star Exemption - Important, Read

August 28th, 2013 6:38 PM by Laurie L. Weingart, Lic. Real Estate Broker

Homeowners in New York State who currently receive the Basic Star property tax exemption must re-register with the NYS Tax Department by the end of the year.  This is scheduled to be a one time re-registration process.

You should be receiving a letter with your homeowner's code in the mail from State Tax and Finance.  Once you receive that code, you may register online by visiting www.tax.ny.gov.  Registration with begin August 19th, however, you must have that code to proceed, so please keep an eye out for their letter.

Senior Citizens who receive Enhanced Star are not affected by the new registration requirement and instead must continue to follow the annual Enhanced Star procedures by either applying annually or by enrolling in the automatic Income Verification Program.
